Beyond the ramp and reacher: Preparing clients for wheelchair life (January 12, 2026)

Recorded On: 01/12/2026

Presented by: Kathryn Sorensen

Accessibility, environmental modification, and functional independence are central to occupational therapy practice across all settings. With fewer than one percent of homes fully wheelchair accessible (Scheckler et al., 2022), clinicians must assess, adapt, and advocate for inclusive environments that promote participation, safety, and dignity for wheelchair users in daily life and the community. This webinar will explore practical strategies to help clients who use wheelchairs navigate their homes and communities safely and independently. Topics include accessible home modifications (bathrooms, kitchens, entryways), adaptive technology and smart home tools, reasonable accommodations, and creative problem-solving approaches to mobility challenges in everyday environments. Participants will also review case examples, affordable equipment solutions, and client education strategies that promote autonomy, safety, and participation across diverse practice settings. After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify at least three practical home and community modifications that increase safety and independence for individuals who use wheelchairs.
  2. Describe key reasonable accommodation principles relevant to client advocacy and housing design.
  3. Apply creative, problem-solving strategies and adaptive technology solutions to enhance occupational performance and participation for wheelchair users in diverse environments.
